Originally from Kenosha Wisconsin, Carl started playing the piano at the age of 8. He was first introduced to jazz in Middle School where started to improvise and play in the large and small jazz ensembles. After high school, Carl attended the Conservatory of Music at Lawrence University, where he received a degree in Theory and Composition with an Emphasis in Jazz under Fred Sturm. In 2011, Carl moved to Chicago where he completed a Masters in Jazz Composition at DePaul University under Bob Lark and Tom Matta. Carl is an active pianist, playing in a wide verity of ensembles with a wide verity of styles all around Chicago. As a composer Carl leads the Carl Kennedy Large Ensemble which include many of the top players from around Chicago’s jazz scene.
