What is Kindermusik?
Kindermusik is a music & movement program that focuses on brain development through musical activities. It has been a proven method for 30 years, and our teachers had to be trained and licensed to teach it. Each activity we do in class has a specific purpose. Our award winning classes use a child-centered approach to enrich your child’s social, cognitive, language, emotional, physical, and musical development. It is a sequential program that grows with your child, preparing them for later music lessons as well as school skills. The curricula are based upon the principles of early education applied to developmentally appropriate practice as defined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Plus, the philosophy is rooted in the work of early childhood development experts like Piaget, Montessori, and Greenspan, as well as the music teachings of Suzuki, Orff and Kodaly. Music terms and concepts are introduced in a way that children understand-through games, movement and pretend play!
What makes Kindermusik different than other music classes?
The main difference is that we view the parent as the child’s first and most important teacher. Our classes focus on parent-child interaction and early childhood development. The instructor teaches the parents how to do the music and movement activities, explaining developmental information, and allowing each family to participate in their own way. Parents are encouraged to adapt activities to their child’s interests and abilities. Classes focus on the learning process, rather than performance. Class is taught a licensed educator, not an entertainer or children’s performer.
Can my babysitter bring my child to class?
All children and caregivers are welcome, however, we very strongly encourage parents (or grandparents) to bring their children to class if at all possible for Village and Our Time (0-3 years old). We offer evening and weekend classes to accommodate working parents. Children learn best with their parents as the most important teacher. Included in class are home activities, and by being there in class to see your child’s smile and development, you as a parent will be equipped with songs, games, and activities to make great parenting easier. We find that parents enjoy the class just as much as the children!
What will we experience in class?
In class you will experience singing, moving, focused listening, story time, group dances, and instrument play on rhythm sticks, shakers, sandblocks, drums, xylophones, resonator bars, guiros, and more to introduce steady beat, timbre and early ensemble playing. Every class has some repetition built in, and some new material or variation. For each unit, you will receive a new set of take-home CD(s), books, and props to bring the fun out of the classroom and allow you to re-create the learning environment at home while incorporating music into your child’s everyday life.
Our classes help foster creativity and a love of music, and prepare children for music lessons, school, and life. Class is taught by a licensed educator with a music degree and lots of experience teaching children of all ages. Children who graduate from our Kindermusik program may begin private lessons at age 5 instead of 6.
